Outlaw Journalist

Outlaw JournalistJust finished reading Outlaw Journalist by William McKeen. It is a really good read – a nice synthesis of Hunter’s career that takes a pretty balanced look at his achievements and shortcomings. One definitely gets a feel for the Hunter S. Thompson as perceived by media and adoring fans and the private, professional Hunter S. Thompson that wrote brilliantly, word-by-word. I would liked to have learned more about the relationship between Thompson and Acosta, but this is not a book about Acosta. It is a well-written peripheral observer and researcher’s account of what made Hunter S. Thompson unique. Where most HST books fail to look from multiple angles for the man behind Uncle Duke, this book does not. McKeen succeeds in recording an objective biography of a highly subjective man…the great Doctor of Gonzo Journalism.

William works for the University of Florida School of Journalism, which makes him extra cool. Check out the Outlaw Journalist Facebook if you get a chance.
